Here we are… exactly two months out from Ironman Coeur d’Alene.
How did that happen?!
I’ve been so in the zone lately that I barely noticed it’s suddenly almost May. The theme of the last month: operation autopilot. Between the new job fog and adjusting to a new (somewhat hellish) commute, it’s been go-go-go and training whenever I can. Which means that there’s been little free time and far too many nights of finishing a run at 9:30p, followed by a quick stop at Chipotle for a salad with barbacoa, white rice and guac (and chips, obviously). Far from ideal, I know.
But, that said, training is going well. It’s been consistent (all the green boxes!) and incredibly intense and focused… focused on each interval, each session, how my body feels, getting more sleep (more here and here), squeezing in functional strength + stretching sessions, and most importantly, enjoying it, no matter what time I hop off the trainer or get home from running.
At a work event last week, I had the privilege of hearing John Jacobs, co-founder of Life is good, speak. Inspiring start-up story aside, there was one key takeaway from his talk: living by a “get to” optimistic attitude (versus a “have to” attitude). That one little word is powerful. Think about it. If you frame your training (or anything in life for that matter) as something you get to do, you’re more likely to enjoy it. When you have to do something… well, how is having to do anything fun?!
I get to swimbikerun my heart out, and that, my friends, is pretty awesome. #heartFULLofgratitude
With that, here’s a quick training update…
Swim
Nothing too exciting in the pool… just lots of paddle work and intervals. My new favorite suit: Lo Swim’s training bikini. It stays put, even while pushing off the wall. And, it’s neon, and we all know that I love anything neon. I’ve seen also some sneak peeks of the new Coeur Sports training two-piece, and it looks fab, so you can bet I’ll be all over that once they’re launched. And, goggles… if you haven’t checked out ROKA’s new goggles, get on it. Although they’re a bit bug-ish, I’m a BIG fan of the X1s (light vermillion is great in the pool). No leaks and no crazy goggles lines!
Bike
Again, nothing overly exciting on the bike. Coach continually pushes both my physical and mental limits with near max intervals; the last one was 60 minutes of getting comfortable with the uncomfortable, sans headphones. Oof.
Despite some long awaited 70F temps, I have yet to ride outside (I know, I know…). For good reason, though: my bike fitter, Chris Balser, recently flipped my aero bars, so it wasn’t safe to ride outside. But, it just got a tune-up, j-bends and re-cabling from mechanic extraordinaire Lee at Grand Performance, and now after one more tweak with Balser this past weekend, it’s finally ready to ride outside. I can’t wait to see how all the winter intervals translate to the road and the first time trial of the season!
Sweet Zoey cheering me on during intervals Easter weekend ♥
Bike fit by the best, Chris, the Bicycle Fit Guru!
Run
It’s been all about the run. Slow is the new fast – with some speed and tempo in the mix, too – and, I’ve never felt better… thank you, legs – and, Hoka One One Cliftons! (I cannot say enough good things about these shoes… game changers.)
This is week three of run overload (the most I’ve ever ran… eight runs last week!), so I’m being extra diligent about staying off my feet, minimizing use of my standing desk (boo), getting enough rest and recovering with lavender epsom salt soaks (try these, you guys… they’re incredibly restorative and relaxing).
Happy swimbikerunning, friends!
Long runs have resumed along the mighty Mississippi
Easter long run around down main street in my hometown… quiet, eh?
Sunshine, shorts and these ladies… Sunday long runs don’t get much better
Finding some love in the day with a run down one of my favorite streets, Summit Avenue
And, al fresco Birchwood Café brunches, the first of the year!

Congrats on some great training!! Sometimes fitting everything in can be a challenge, but you seem to be managing that awesomely…even with the job change, so kudos to you chica!!
Looks like you’ll be all set by the time IMCDA rolls around! Love the shorts and sunshine 🙂
Eight runs in a week for IM training…wow! That is so impressive! You are knocking this training out of the park! Enjoy your first outside ride of the season…they tend to be so perfect!!
What a great update. It sounds like you’re thriving even though you’re so busy 🙂
So true on the “get to.” Also, new job? How the heck did I miss that?!?! Congrats!
And, Cliftons = love!
Love the update. You rock!! That’s all 🙂
“Get to” – I LOVE that. I get to run up big hills, I get to cook myself delicious primal foods. I get to be your blog friend 😉
Your training sounds stellar! You’re going to punch IM Coeur D’Alene in the face in two months’ time!
Can you tell me about Hokas? I see a lot of IM athletes wearing them, and I saw them both in Courmayeur and Chamonix. What’s so special about them?
Sounds like you are doing GREAT – even though balancing a new job with training has to be a challenge. I appreciate the reminder of “get to” – I think I might need it this weekend at St. George!
I totally agree with the “get to” instead of “have to” ! I sometimes find myself complaining about the training but then I remind myself and say outloud that I made this choice this is how I want to spend my time! Keep up the great work!
So happy to hear that training is going so well!! You are totally going to smash it!! I need some new googles. maybe I will try out the Rokas!! Very exciting that your bike is almost “outside” ready!!! Good for you on 8 runs in a week! I can’t imagine!! 😉
Your training sounds awesome even with the transition to a new job! I am excited the tri season is almost here yeeeeee!
Great work =)
Powerhouse like always, Sis! Each minute is another step closer to KONA! 😀 Miss you (tons!!) but happy you… “got to a healthier place”. 😉 😉
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again — you’re amazing, my friend!
Way to put the work in Erin! It sounds like you are rocking your training 🙂 Love that little nugget of wisdom from John Jacobs. How lucky are we that we get to put our bodies to the test swimming, biking, and running in beautiful places with our friends!?!?
P.S. My keyboard is covered in drool after looking at that black beauty of an Argon18!
Great update lady. You are rocking it as per usual. Your little hometown shot looks like the old west to me for some reason. (And I say that with love b/c I live in a small town with an also quiet at times main street.) My bf loves those goggles too. One of these days I will try his. 😀
Sounds like your training is going so well; I’m really happy to hear that! I love all your IG pictures of hard training sessions. I have high hopes for your CdA race!!
And awesome about all the running! I just bought new Newtons but was tempted to try out the Cliftons. I think after I’m done with my two current Newtons (one for trail, one regular) I might have to test out Hokas.
Lastly, awesome you got to hear the co-founder of Life is Good speak. And what a great message to live by!
Happy training!
I love your updates – you are doing SO well! Can’t wait to cheer you on for CdA 🙂 The suit is super cute – I checked their website, what color do you have? The others looked more pastel (I also prefer bright!). Also tempted to try Roka googles and Hokas since you and others have raved. Have a great week!
Thanks so much, Britt! I have the neon papaya, and it’s BRIGHT! Much brighter in person than on the website. And, I definitely recommend the Roka goggles and Hokas… they’re both fantastic! Hope you’re well! Been thinking about you 🙂
I hear you on the new job/hellish commute front. Not sure what I was thinking starting a new job smack in the middle of IM training, but I guess people like you and I are always up for an added challenge?! I recently tried Chipotle for first time (crazy , I know) and loved it. Is there a reason you pick white rice over brown? Just curious! I’m always having the debate in my head…
Loving the neon suit! I looked at that brand and love their style. I just don’t have the guts to wear a two-piece at the pool… too insecure I guess… jealous you have the confidence to do so!
Keep up y our FOCUSED training, it will pay off, I know it!
You’Re so close! I remember being 2 months out from CDA – so much excitement and the end is near – soon you’ll be tapering (oh yeah and peaking first …)!
How’s the coverage on that bikini? Inquiring minds (and ladies with some junk in the trunk!) want to know! 🙂
Ha! It’s definitely not full coverage, but I’ve had no mishaps 🙂 I’m about 123 pounds and wear a size medium if that helps! Both the top and bottom have drawstrings, too, to keep it in place!
