weekly workouts // october 15

10/22/2012

Monday, October 15 – ugh… need.new.goggles. The first 500 yards were leak-free this morning, but the next 500 involved at least five stops to empty all the water. Nick was nice enough to switch for the final 600 yards, though these ones dug into my eyeballs, making for some uncomfortable blurry yards. Nonetheless, the morning in the water was a nice way to kick off the week.

Swim: 1,600 yards, about 35 minutes.

Tuesday, October 16 – after sitting in the car for about 10 hours the past two days, I couldn’t wait to get out on my bike. And, what a PERFECT October day to be in saddle! Today could quite possibly be the last cycling shorts friendly day until next spring. Sad. I got home mid afternoon, so while I waited for my friend Sonia to get done with work, I went out for a quick nine miles down Summit to river road and back to the cathedral. We met up around 5p for a fun cruise on the Ford-Franklin loop. We had so much to talk about the hour flew by and before we knew it, it was nearly dark. I wasn’t anticipating being out that late, so didn’t bring any blinkies… I always feel like such an irresponsible cyclist when I’m biking at dusk or in the dark without them.

So, I have this thing with biking to the next mile if my Garmin says XX.5 miles or greater. Today’s mileage – thisclose to 24 miles – drives me crazy! Just a couple more pedal strokes…! Nick thinks I’m crazy when I make him ride around the block or when I bike around the parking lot to get that extra few tenths of a mile 🙂

Bike: 23.99 miles, 1:33:14.

Wednesday, October 17 – so this is what swimming is supposed to be like?! I guess new goggles make all the difference between a marginal get-through-it swim and a really fun I-could-keep-swimming-for-hours swim. My new TYR nest pro goggles are soft on my face and don’t leak or leave craters around my eyes for hours. Following a 500-yard warm-up, I did 6 x 200-yard intervals, alternating with hand paddles and a pull buoy, and a 150-yard cool down.

Swim: 1,850 yards, about 41 minutes.

After work, I relaxed on my mat at the CorePower Highland Park studio in Amelia’s lovely C2. Her class never fails to amaze and challenge me. A couple fun sequences today: reverse warrior two into warrior three + eagle into tripod with eagle legs into tripod and into crow. Transitioning from crow into tripod is getting easier, but mastering the reverse – gracefully – is tricky… definitely a sequence to continue practicing.

Yoga: C2 vinyasa, 60 minutes.

Thursday, October 18 – today’s rest day was exciting…! I’m still pinching myself that I’m actually registered for Ironman Canada at Whistler in 2013!

Friday, October 19 – today’s rest day highlight: Friday pho at Ngon with our friends Julie + Chad. A looong overdue catch-up, we had a great time chatting,  slurping pho and sipping wine.

Saturday, October 20 – loveliest of lovely vinyasa practice this morning celebrating lululemon athletica Grand Avenue’s first birthday. Lead by amazing teachers Brigitte and Leah – check out Brigitte’s new studio, fusion-yoga, and we will miss you, Leah! – I was lucky enough to unroll my mat between Nick and my friend Kara. Practice flowed through down dog, warrior two, figure four and wheel and left me blissed out and happy that such an amazing community exists just down the street from my front door. Even cooler: The sweetest gift ever from the lovelies who work there (designed by the talented Amelia). I had no idea what was in the box when they gave it to me, but they must have known that I needed gentle reminder that a superwomen still lives inside (because I often forget and let my self-doubt get the best of me) 🙂 #blessed #thankyou

Yoga: vinyasa flow, 60 minutes.

Following yoga, we brunched on almond flour pancakes (make these!) and then Nick left on a 15-mile run while I caught up with friend Andrea at Kopplin’s over americanos. We had so much to talk about – triathlon, swimming, running, blogging, life! – and in a flash, two hours had flown by. So fun! And, thanks for the swim workouts, dear!

Another lovely October day for a spin. Just a quick ride on the Ford-Franklin loop before sunset, complete with a few crazy photos at 20 mph.

Bike: 15.1 miles, 53:22.

Sunday, October 21 – today started out assisting my sister at a few photo shoots at Battle Creek Park and on Summit Avenue in Saint Paul. It was gorgeous out, with a glimmer of sunshine on the last leaves hanging on. Watching my crazy talented sis work her photography magic is is SO inspiring. She has such an eye for detail and always captures the most perfect moments.

OK, today was probably the last tri shorts friendly ride of 2012. And, what a ride. I didn’t want to get off my bike. Nick biked + ran early, so I was on my own for a cruise around Nokomis, down beautiful Minnehaha, around the lakes and back home on the greenway. Dang, I love this route. Sunshiny, happy miles on the madone.

Bike: 30.4 miles, 1:45:44.

And, the last sweet treat until November 4. I’m already missing dark chocolate. Damn IMFL taper.

Weekly stats

How did I not run this week?! Gah! Super happy to bike about 70 miles, though, in mid-October.

Swim: 3,450 yards, 1:16
Bike: 69.49 miles, 4:12:20
Yoga: two classes, 2:00

Have a fun week, everyone!

Is Nick doing Ironman Florida? My exercise goal this week: 2 yoga classes (I’ve only been doing one/week and have been feeling like I need more.)

I’m jealous you got out in shorts again 🙂 on my run on Sunday I wore capris and really wished I would have gotten one last run in, in shorts.

kopplins is my favorite! soon they will have the maple latte- you need to try that, it’s amazing.

sort of thinking i should start posting work outs- maybe it would hold me more accountable?

A maple latte?! If it’s as good as the rogue mocha… yum!

Not a bad idea! It definitely holds me more accountable… and is a good way to track my progress 🙂

What is happening Nov. 4? And why could it possibly exclude ice cream?

    • Reply sweetsweat 10/23/2012 at 9:30 pm

Nick’s ironman is November 3, so no sweets, including my beloved ice cream, until after 🙂

I glad you were able to find new goggles! I spent years with constant goggle marks and now whenever I put them back on they come back instantly haha. You are going to rock that Ironman!! p.s. That pic of you guys biking is too cute!
