weekly workouts // may 14

Monday, May 14 – rest day. I debated a 6p yoga class, but decided sprucing up the patio would be more fun. After a trip to Linder’s, Nick and I made dinner (I have a new appreciation for peeling and de-veining shrimp) and then got dirt(y). Within a half-hour, we had terra cotta pots full of basil, cilantro, rosemary and mint, plus cherry tomatoes and a few of my favorite flowers – wave petunias, begonias and sweet potato vine.

Tuesday, May 15 – brick reversal tonight so my legs would be fresh on the run. While my running legs felt strong, my heart rate was higher than I’d like (need to run more!). Spinning on the bike felt good, but the entire 15-mile Ford-Franklin loop, I crossed my fingers I wouldn’t get a flat. The CO2 in my saddlebag wouldn’t have been any good without a spare tube (we forgot to replenish the supply after Sunday’s two-flat fiasco), and thankfully, I didn’t need one. Note: Always carry a spare tube!

Run: ~2 miles, 18:30
Bike: 15.43 miles, 57:41

Wednesday, May 16 – ugh… another morning fail. Why, oh why, is it so tough to get up and to the pool in the morning?! So, instead, after a long day at work, the yoga studio called my name. I instantly relaxed into the warm room and melted onto my mat. Honestly, I barely remember my favorite teacher, Amelia, starting class. Sixty minutes later, through a fun vinyasa flow / balance sequence, all my worries had disappeared, and I was soaked in sweet sweat. What I love about Amelia’s classes are her words of yoga wisdom. This week focused around making choices consciously and practicing honesty, both on and off your yoga mat. A favorite quote from class:

You are the master of your own peace, gratitude and resiliency.

Thursday, May 17 – my first P2 tri team practice! So awesome I’m still giddy.

Friday, May 18finnnnnnally, Nick and I made it to the pool. An easy 1,200m, it was such a nice start to the day. There’s something so refreshing about the water so early in the morning.

Saturday, May 19 – long run day, and it was 85 degrees and wicked windy. I’m typically not a hot weather runner – I’ve had some bad experiences, particularly Grandma’s Marathon in 2008 – but today’s 6.61-mile run couldn’t have been any better. After a mile together around Lake Calhoun, Nick met up with his P2 buddy, Sam, to run another 19. Halfway around Calhoun, I connected via William Berry Parkway for three miles around Lake Harriet and then back around the rest of Calhoun to wrap up.

Compared to recent runs, I was sure this one would take forever and that I’d feel terrible. But, despite a sunburn, I felt fantastic the entire run (and probably could have kept going). The breeze off the lake kept me cool, and hydration was easy with the strategically placed lakeside water fountains. And, even better, my hammie, hip and knee didn’t hurt once. Switching up the scenery sure helped, too (thanks to Hyedi and May’s #runchat challenge to take a different route!).

Run stats: 6.61 miles, 1:01:18, 9:16 pace

Sunday, May 20 – a perfect, rainy morning for a steamy yoga studio. Class focused on yin and yang. The yin: vinyasa flow, including a couple favorites postures, hot yoga style tree, eagle and half moon. The yang: serious stretching. My hamstrings are so crazy tight that touching my toes is tough while sitting my my tush.

Weekly stats

Bike: 34.14 miles, 2:31:31
Run: 11.83 miles, 1:49:48

This week I plan to swim twice (gasp!), attend two P2 practices, bike 100 miles and stretch more(!). What about you?

I really need to learn how to fix a flat. I’m crossing my fingers on every ride and that’s not good!

This week I plan to go to my fave core class tonight, get a swim in, a ten-mile run on Friday and get out on my bike a couple of times! I’m not sure yoga will happen this week, but I’m going to try!

Sounds like a super week of training!

If I needed to, I could change a flat, but it would take me for-ever. I wonder if there are any flat clinics coming up… maybe LUNA?
