weekly workouts // november 12

11/19/2012

Monday, November 12 – after a crazy busy weekend and an even busier two weeks prior, it was so nice to just relax and laze on the sofa tonight.

Tuesday, November 13 – Sunday’s Performance Power trail run at Theo Worth re-lit my running spark. I joined a few teammates at the cathedral for a stair, parking ramp and hill run around downtown Saint Paul. We skipped up stairs and ran repeats through the science museum parking ramp and climbed the three stairways at the Xcel Energy parking ramp over and over and over again. We finished the 75-minute run on the stairs behind the James J. Hill house on Summit. In addition to a beautiful evening, the city views were fantastic.

Run: nine miles, 75 minutes.

Wednesday, November 14 – my workout plan tonight was to join Sonia at the 5:30p Axcelerate Fitness class. But, thanks to ridiculous traffic downtown Minneapolis – it took 32 minutes to get out of the parking lot! – I didn’t get home until about 5:45p. Gah! There’s almost nothing I dislike more than when traffic interferes with my workout.

Thursday, November 15 – I met friend Jess (check out her amazing shop, Prime & Polish) for Amelia’s C2 vinyasa class at the CorePower Yoga Highland Park studio. A packed class + full of nuggets of #yogawisdom as always, it was complete bliss. We flowed from reverse warrior to half moon to tree to dancer to standing splits and down to chatarunga through a transition I just can’t seem to land. Nonetheless, it was challenging and fun!

Yoga: vinyasa, 60 minutes.

Friday, November 16 – it’s been a long week with later-than-I’d-like bedtimes, so getting up extra early for a morning swim didn’t happen all week until today. Today was tough, too, but I’m glad I went; the water felt fantastic. After a 500-yard warm-up, I swam five 200s alternating with paddles and a pull buoy and rounded it out with a 100-yard cool down.

Swim: 1,600 yards, about 35 minutes.

Thanks to my thoughtful, generous friend Sage (thank you!), Nick and I went to the Banff Mountain Film Festival world tour at the U. How did I not know about this?! Wow. The films were top-notch and now I want to pack up and go back country skiing in the Alps, BASE jumping in France and rock climbing in China. The evening’s feature film, One Step Beyond, told the incredible true story of snowboarder and BASE jumper Géraldine Fasnacht. Other films that night: Ernest from Colorado, the first Afghan ski race, RocTrip China and white water kayaking in New Zealand.

Saturday, November 17 – what a gorgeous morning for a 5K! Friend Hyedi asked me to be a running buddy at the first Girls on the Run Twin Cities 5K at Lake Phalen, and I couldn’t have been more excited to do so! A wonderful organization for girls in third through fifth grade, it focuses on healthy fun through running. Its mission: “to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running.”

Race report this week…

Run: 3.1 miles, for fun!

Minnesota weather has been unbelievable. Temps topped out in the mid 50s today! I’m definitely not complaining, but I remember as a kid when it snowed in early November and it didn’t melt until April.

After brunch at our favorite place, Birchwood Café, Nick and I took advantage of the sunshine on the single track trails at Lebanon Hills. Being a road cyclist, off-road and through the woods was quite the switch – and, I LOVED it! More mountain biking thoughts to come this week…

Bike: eight miles, 60 minutes.

Sunday, November 18 – my original plan was to run hills and stairs with P2 this morning, but after being with friend Sonia in the ER much of the night (poor girl… I hope you’re feeling better!), I listened to my tired body and opted to sleep in. After a lazy morning, Nick and I loaded up the mountain bikes for another spin at Lebanon. Apparently a lot of other bikers had the same idea; the parking lot was full, so we had to make our own parking lot in the grass. Just an ok ride… I was pretty tired and just not feeling it, being extra cautious on the downhills.

Bike: about eight miles, 60 minutes.

Weekly stats

A pretty varied week, and I had a ton of fun on my first mountain biking adventures!

Swim: 1,600 yards, ~35:00
Bike: 16 miles, ~2:00
Run: 12.1 miles, 1:50
Yoga: one class, 60:00

This week: More running with P2, the Turkey Day 5K and lots of yoga. The weather’s supposed to stay nice, too, so I’m hoping to hop on my road bike for a spin around MSP on Wednesday afternoon.

Is anyone else running the Turkey Day 5K or another race before that delicious thanksgiving meal?

Thanks, Sista! It needed some sprucing 🙂 It’s a free template called sight.

Yay… can’t wait to see what you create!

      HAPPY 3OTH BIRTHDAY!

Love the new look Erin! When I saw your initial tweet about MTB, I KNEW you would love it 🙂 I have a blast with it – and sometimes can manage to keep with #TheFreshman and his buddies through the single tracks. Try Murphy Hanrahan sometime – or better yet, let me know when you want to go and I’ll join you!

Thank you, Anne! I love road cycling, but wow, what a rush mountain biking is! I would LOVE to ride sometime. Where is Murphy?

I totally know how you feel about traffic interfering with a workout! I missed yoga on Friday because there was an accident on the interstate. I still feel off! Grumble, grumble.

    • Reply erin 11/20/2012 at 11:07 am

Serious grumble is right! Hope you make it to your mat this week!

I hate when bad traffic gets in the way of a good workout! It puts me in such a funk! I want to live in a place where i can walk or bike to the gym!

    • Reply erin 11/20/2012 at 11:09 am

I hear ya… it makes me extra cranky. Living close to the gym is SO nice! I’m about six blocks from my yoga studio and love it.

Good luck Thursday! I’ll be on the lookout for you! And I love the Girls on the Run program! When I was coaching (swimming) in North Carolina, some of the girls did it (their moms ran the group) and I joined them for some 5Ks! 🙂

I’ll be watching for you, too! Best of luck! I would love to be more involved in the amazing GOTR next year (if my ironman training schedule allows me any free time!).
