at the doc, both of us sick 😵‍💫

What a mixed bag month! From being sick (again) to celebrating Jackson’s first birthday, we hit the lowest lows, the highest highs, and everything in between.

The low: We were all slammed with a wicked head cold in early June. Jackson was sick for 2 weeks (seeing your babe so sick is a really terrible helpless feeling), and I’m certain he’s traumatized by the nose Frida snot sucker for life (or really anything having to do with his nose!). Negative covid tests all around (including three for me), thank goodness, but damnit, I would really love stay healthy for awhile.

The high: Jackson turned O N E! Not sure where the year went – it was the slowest-fastest and best-hardest.

The in-between: Nick had a work offsite so I solo mommed it for five days in the middle of being sick (with some help thanks to his mom), summer arrived in full force with a few 100F days, and a few other highlights…

rejoined instagram

After a nearly monthlong hiatus, I signed back into instagram and it was… it felt like such a waste of time (because it is, duh). I quickly found myself scrolling and watching stories and promptly stopped and then Roe v. Wade was overturned (WTF) and then I really doom scrolled. Ugh. It’s so easy to fall back into old habits, which wasn’t the point of taking a break. I recalibrated and I’m back to being mindful about my scrolling. Now if I could just get the favorites option added to my account… anyone know how to do that? And can we talk about the latest update? It’s the worst UX!

had cysts removed

This was the second time I’ve had epidermal inclusion cysts removed from my eyes and it was less fun than I remember. There were about 20 on my eyelids and around my eyes – so much swelling! – so they had to be removed by an oculoplastics doc. It didn’t dawn on me why I had so many until after: because of my eye mask. I wash my face almost every night, but forget to wash my eye mask regularly so the dead skin from that likely built up on my eyelids causing the cysts. I haven’t worn my eye mask since.

started a backyard project

We started phase 1 of our backyard reno! It included adding a paver patio off the garage (off the garage because eventually we wanna add a pergola and that won’t work on the house because of the door and a window), cutting down the existing awkward stage-like deck until we decide exactly what we want for stairs to the door, and sodding a stubborn dirt section the dogs destroyed. We’re thrilled to have a more usable and functional space for Jackson to play and for us to hang out. To come in Phase 2 next year: new fence, a sidewalk along the side of the house, stairs to our main door, and more landscaping.

not my first paver choice (my dream pavers are hex!), but they were a steal and since this isn’t our forever house, they’ll work just fine.

favorite thing

Supergoop Glow Screen. This stuff is magic! A slightly tinted SPF 40 moisturizer that gives you the best dewy glowy look. I’m obsessed.

Side note: I stopped selling Beautycounter a few months back. Not that I don’t like their products (I still use a handful of their skincare), but mostly because I’m not a big promoter and always forgot to share. I’ve also been branching out and trying other products – there are so many great ones! – and have found some products I like even better.

training for…

I still don’t know. I’ve really been struggling with figuring out what to race and to be honest, if I want to race. I mean, I DO – because I desperately miss being fit and the daily grind of building that fitness – but at the same time that fitness seems impossibly far away at a time when it’s been challenging to string together a consistent block (mostly because I was sick for 2+ weeks). Nick and I have had a lot of tough conversations about both of us training at the same time – him for Kona and me for a fall 70.3 – and we can’t figure out a schedule that allows both of us to train how we like to train and be present for life outside of that (Jackson, sleep, downtime, household tasks, work). So the TL;DR: it’s his year to race the big race, and my year to support and race more manageable distances. I’m eyeing a couple that sound exciting, challenging, and most importantly, fun.

jackson is one!

I have no idea how it’s possible, but Jackson turned one June 29. He’s the most curious, determined little dude and reminds us every day to be present, enjoy the little things, and to always keep our sense of wonder. He’s made our lives so much better. We love you, Jackson! ♡

the doggos

They’re very into vulchuring right now and follow Jackson everywhere, waiting for him to drop a puff or any bite of food. And Jackson also loves to share.
