Spring, where are you? After a brief bout of temps in the 50s, March went like a lion with snow and temps in the 20s. It feels like spring will never get here 😭

Weather aside, this month was a tough one all around. After I fell running (more on that below), I got my first head cold in two years and then Jackson got it. We had a rough few days and nights – filled with all the snuggles, which I’ll never complain about. And then just as my cold was subsiding, I got influenza (despite getting a flu shot), which was rough. It knocked me out – I didn’t get out of bed for 2+ days. The lowlights: the nearly 20-bpm RHR increase, a through-the-roof stress score, and bonkers muscle and joint pain, which made it almost impossible to sleep for a few nights because my spine hurt so bad. Thankfully we’re all on the mend and feeling much better.

Here’s a look at March…

running

Running was going well until it wasn’t. The highlights this month: nearly all workouts in the green, nailing my tempo, and a few weeks at 50+ miles – the most I’ve ran since my IRONMAN Coeur d’Alene build in 2015. But a couple weeks ago I decided it was time to break up with the treadmill so I took my long run outside. My plan was to loop back home after the first 10 to refill water and head back out for the last 7, but mid run I decided to finish up my 70-minute tempo outside and cool down with 5 on the treadmill. With two minutes left – and two blocks from home – I hit a patch of gravel and uneven pavement on a downhill and went down, hard. I don’t know what was worse: the shake to my confidence or the gnarly road rash. I took it as a sign to back off a bit, so cut back my runs the following week. And in hindsight, I maybe shoulda taken a few days of complete rest. The universe sure thought so, too, throwing influenza at me and forcing a few days of complete rest.

back to pelvic PT

Of course I made Nick take a few pics of my road rash. But it wasn’t the road rash that made my jaw drop. It was my belly. I still look 3 months pregnant (I think so. Nick doesn’t). Maybe not, but seeing that pic – and really checking in with my body (my lower back’s been bothering me lately) – was enough for me to schedule a pelvic PT appointment to reassess for diastasis recti. Turns out, I have a 3-finger separation 🥴 so I’m back to weekly PT appointments and specific core exercises. Lesson learned: strength training alone isn’t enough postpartum. Specific core work is crucial. Also reminding myself that my body comp probably won’t change much until I’m done breastfeeding, and that’s ok because I’m grateful to still be feeding my little dude.

family time

This month was all about time at home with my favorite people, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. We didn’t do much or really go anywhere thanks to the garbage weather and being under the weather. But here’s to an April with more time outside, our first flight in over two years, my first race in nearly three years(!), and staying healthy!

9 months!

This age is the most fun! Jackson is army crawling all over the house, babbling nonstop, inspects everything, is starting to pull himself up on things, demands food as soon as he’s in his highchair – his favorites are sweet potatoes, berries, and oatmeal – loves music (Raffi, Fleetwood Mac and Colbie Caillat are favorites), and is all around just the happiest little dude. We love him to pieces and can’t imagine life without him ♡

the doggos

Luma only voluntarily sits next to Olli when bribed with food 😆 Their current favorites are apples and bananas.

Highly recommend MommaStrong (https://mommastrong.com/) for female anatomy focused functional fitness programs especially if you’re dealing with things like DR and other postpartum body stuff.

*Sorry as I get onto my soap box now…* Courtney (founder/creator/mom) is amazing and creates 15 minute full body limited equipment (like band, cans, and support surface only) workouts. She also has “fix me” programs for things like DR and IT band syndrome and others. Only $12/month! Great complementary program to PT. *getting off soap box*
