At the end of last summer, Nick and I escaped the city for a getaway on Burntside Lake near Ely, MN. It was the first – and last (travel, I miss you so much 😭) – time we’d been out of the city since covid started. After a summer of refreshing the news nearly nonstop, we stayed off our phones and social as much as possible – just the recharge we both needed. Woods and water are so good for the soul.
We snagged a cabin at Camp Van Vac thanks to a cancellation (it’s usually booked solid a year in advance). This old school resort – think not fancy, sand in your feet, don’t shower for a few days resort – features 100-year-old lakeside log cabins and separate bathroom + shower buildings. Our cabin had a full kitchen so we packed enough food for our meals – pita pizzas, chickpea pasta, s’mores. You know, the cozy comfort food that’s so good when brisk fall temps arrive.
Time slowed down when we were there. Our only plans: coffee by the lake, lazy afternoons reading in the hammock, a sweat every day (we brought our bikes and running shoes), and me beating Nick in Scrabble every night. We also spent some time in Ely – with multiple stops at Brainstorm Bakery for a triple berry tart – and went for a windy canoe on Burntside (Luma was not a fan and nearly tipped us several times).
Here’s a look at our weekend in pics. We can’t wait to go back!
