Monday, July 16 – a much needed rest day!
Tuesday, July 17 – it was a sticky one at tonight’s P2 run workout. We met at the Macalaster track, and after recapping the weekend’s races and training sessions, we headed out for a 60-minute run. Suraya and I teamed up for a steady six miles in the sunshine. Our route: St. Clair to Davern to Edgcumbe to Hamline to Summit to Snelling. She’s a great running partner and motivated me to push through my wonky stomach that started around mile four. Thanks, lady!
Run: 6.02 miles, 56:15.
Wednesday, July 18 – bike maintenance day! My Madone needed some TLC in a bad, bad way. 1) It still had its original tires (4,500 miles and bald bald bald!); 2) it was grimy; and, 3) the chain and crank hadn’t been cleaned in months.
Aside from polishing it up nicely (ok, Nick did this), I brushed up on my tire changing skills. Knowing how to do this is a must for every cyclist / triathlete. And, sadly, up until today, I had only changed a tire… hmm… twice? Why? Because I’ve only flatted once in the past three years (knock on wood), and thankfully a friendly cyclist stopped to help me (though given enough time I probably would have figured it out).
Anyway, it’s not nearly as difficult as you’d think; it just takes some muscle to push the tire away from the rim with the tire lever. And, once you get it started, it’s simple to get the rest all the way around. I’m not the most efficient tire changer, though; it took forever!
Thursday, July 19 – this little gem arrived in the mail today from my fabulous sister. It’s been awhile since we’ve sent each other cards via snail mail, so it made my week when I read it. She always knows exactly what to say to lift me up 🙂
Rather than joining the P2 workout tonight, Nick and I did a brick from home. Our bike down Summit and the Ford-Franklin loop was fast and fun and was followed by a quick run on a sketchy road in Saint Paul I’d rather not run again; I think I’ll stick with Summit Avenue. Overall, tonight’s workout felt good. After a few days off the bike, pedaling hit the workout spot. It took a few blocks to find my running groove, but once I did, my legs loosened up for a negative split on mile two.
Bike: 15.1 miles, 52:08.
Run: 2.04 miles, 16:47.
Friday, July 20 – just a quick swim at LA Fitness after work. After swimming at Highland and in Lake Nokomis the past couple weeks, LA’s 25-meter pool felt so short! But – and I’m shocked to say this – swimming felt awesome tonight! Maybe I’m finally warming up to it…
Swim: 1,800 meters, about 40 minutes.
Friday night rounded out with visiting with my family over cupcakes(!)… and, crossing my fingers this hound is soon ours…
Saturday, July 21 – after the rain cleared off – it poured buckets much of the early morning – we headed out on Minnetonka for a few hours of boating and swimming.
Prior to grilled salmon pre-race dinner at my sister’s and brother-in-law’s house, Nick and I got in a quick spin down Summit and a short segment of River Road. I can’t remember the last time I went for just a 30-minute ride!
Bike: 8.36 miles, 30:42.
Sunday, July 22 – Chisago Lakes 70.3! We finished, and I am a half ironman! Race report this week…
Weekly stats
A mellow week punctuated with a pretty fantastic Sunday 🙂
Swim: 3,720 meters, 1:27:10
Bike: 79.46 miles, 4:23:31
Run: 21.16 miles, 3:24:24
This week: rest + recovery (I’m crazy sore) and some light(er) workouts. I’m already itching to bike, and surprisingly, to swim (running, not so much… yet anyway)!
What do you have on tap this week? Any races this weekend?

What a smart week of workouts in between your two very big events! PS – I need an update: who is this handsome boy, Jack? Congrats again on 70.3!
Isn’t he adorable?! He’s a six-year-old vizsla who needs a new home. He stayed at my sister’s a couple days last week and is the biggest sweetie!
Thank you! And, congrats again on your first triathlon! 🙂
OMG! You have to get him!
I KNOW! 🙂
cute dog!
He’s such a cutie, isn’t he?! Crossing my fingers he’s soon mine 🙂
