weekly workouts // june 11

06/18/2012

Monday, June 11 – I wasn’t kidding when I said my running intensity would pick up this week. It started off with a bang at the Macalaster track with mile repeats. Yikes. I’d normally do this type of workout with my tri team, but since I’m out of town Tuesday for work, I had to get it in. Thankfully, Nick ran with me the first three intervals and then cheered for me the next three.

Run sats: one-mile warm-up + 6 x 1,600m repeats… 7:45 / 7:53 / 7:37 / 7:32 / 7: 28 / 7:14… about 7 miles. (Hooray for negative splits!)

Tuesday, June 12 – today’s bike ride through the South Dakota countryside was beautiful (I was there for work). The weather couldn’t have been more perfect… low 70s + no breeze, a rarity in the normally gusty area. And, traffic was… well, there barely was any, which was nice because I was a bit concerned motorists wouldn’t notice me on the no-shoulder road (I don’t think cyclists are a common sight in eastern SoDak). But, they did – and everyone who drove by gave me a friendly wave.

After yesterday’s wicked track workout, spinning out my legs was exactly what I needed.

Bike: 22.25 miles, 1:24:36.

Wednesday, June 13 – rest day. Oh, and the Nature Valley Grand Prix downtown Saint Paul crit. I was happy to make it home in time at least for the men’s race (wish I could have seen the women, too!). Wow, those guys are fast! Forty miles in 1:15! Once again, I’m inspired to become a pro bike racer 🙂 (This happens every single year I watch the NVGP.)

Thursday, June 14 – a super stormy day, so P2 was canceled, and I reluctantly went to LA Fitness instead. Not sure why, but I had zero motivation to work out and was actually kinda cranky about it. My workout was just… meh. No fans in the second level cardio room = crazy hot and zero airflow. (I left a suggestion at the front desk to buy fans. Doesn’t it seem obvious that fitness centers should have fans?!) After my run, I joined a spin class midway through… decent, but the bikes were weird and and there wasn’t much energy in the room. Nonetheless, I got in a decent workout.

Run: 3.5 miles, 30 minutes.

Bike: about 11 miles, 35 minutes.

Friday, June 15 – Nick and I were leaving for Duluth around 1p, so my only time to bike was early. There’s something so blissful about biking (or even working out in general) when everyone else is working 🙂 An peaceful pedal on my usual route: Summit -> River Road -> Greenway -> Isles -> Calhoun -> Harriet -> home.

Saturday, June 16 – happy 58th birthday, Mom! And, happy Grandma’s Marathon day! Nick did awesome (even though he’ll tell you differently). He ran a 3:32:56 – an incredible time for his first marathon. I’m so proud of you, love 🙂 (Watch for a marathon write-up this week!)

Sunday, June 17 – after solo workouts this week, I joined P2 at Square Lake for a bike + run brick and was happy to be back training with my team. I’ve biked in this area before, but always forget how beautiful it is. Pretty sure there will be a Square Lake half iron registration in the near future 🙂

Thanks to Saturday’s rest, my legs were fresh for all the rollers on the bike. Other than a slight ache in my right leg (note: GET BIKE FIT!), my legs felt strong. I fueled at about the halfway point with some lime-ade Honey Stingers – and probably should have fueled more. I didn’t have much energy left by the end.

Our route: County Road 7 -> County Road 15 -> turnaround at Highway 36 -> County Road 15 -> Highway 96 -> Highway 95 -> Highway 96 -> County Road 15 -> County Road 7

Given all the hills, I’m pretty happy with my average pace: 17.2 mph.

It took about a half-mile for my legs to not feel like lead on the run, but after that, the next three miles went by quickly.

I’m starting to feel ready for my first half iron[wo]man in late July!

Bike: 43.63 miles, 2:29:16. Longest ride of the season (so far)!

Run: 3.42 miles, 31:12.

Icing on the morning’s solid workout: Spending some time with my fabulous family. Happy father’s day to the best dad ever!

Weekly stats

A big week on the bike!

Bike: 108.3 miles, 6:28:20
Run: 13.42 miles, 2:31:12

This week’s goals: swim (seriously!), more time on the bike (the P2 schedule calls for a 3-4 hour ride on Sunday), and I’m going to try my best to make it to one yoga class. It gets so difficult practice in a 95-degree room when it’s 90 degrees outside.

How about you? Any fun workouts on the calendar? Races?

I ended up working late tonight, skipped the gym, and now indulging on some Ben and Jerry’s 1/2 baked. Maybe I burned some calories reading about your workouts. Great job!! Excited to hear about your first tri in July!
