three things: february 2018.

03/01/2018

Did you know that we’re gaining about 20 minutes of daylight a week right now? That extra daylight: gamechanger. It’s so refreshing to leave work when it’s still light. And it’s making after work runs so much better. Now if the foot of snow we got over the weekend would melt… especially since the Birkie‘s done!

Birkie #6 – and a big PR! – for this guy. And whaddya think of Luma’s snowsuit?! (She was so embarrassed.)

What that, here are my February favorites!

1 – yoga once a week

I used to spend a lot of time on my yoga mat. There were even 100 consecutive days once. But then I found triathlon, and that hour of daily zen fell by the wayside. But at the beginning of February – thanks to some inspiration from Hard Coeur Coaching‘s mobility month – I decided that for the rest of this year I was going to make it to my mat once a week. Turns out, that hour of quiet in a hot + humid yoga studio is the best hour of my week ♥ Now if I could figure out how to squeeze in two classes each week…

2 – not wasting food

I was waiting for the light rail a couple months ago when I noticed a sign next to the train schedule: A family of four spends $1,500 a year on food they don’t eat. (Eye-opening marketing, Save the Food. And pretty certain Nick and I eat as much as a family of four does…!) Which got me thinking about how much food we waste. Lonely leftovers that sit in the fridge for a week. More than half a container of spinach gone bad. Moldy butternut squash because they’re a pain in the ass to cut (amiright?!).

In other words: too much.

But since then, we’ve been really intentional about eating all the leftovers – even if that means the same dinner three nights in a row. Buying pre-cut squash at Costco. And using the spinach in smoothies. It’s a win-win – nothing (or much less) goes to waste, and we save money.

I’m also being more intentional about drinking plain old water because I’m pretty sure I’m always dehydrated. I bought a 32-ounce Skratch Nalgene and have been trying my best to drink at least one a day (in addition to all the green tea and kombucha). It’s hard! Partly because I’m always cold, and partly because I want it to have some taste. Time to get over that.

A recent clean-out-the-fridge concoction (leftovers from four separate dinners!).

3 – Trunk Club

Anyone else have a love-hate relationship with shopping? I love getting new stuff, but actually shopping for it? So much time and work. Who has time to drive around Mall of America looking for parking and then to wander around to 37 different stores and try stuff on?! Nope. But then I heard about Trunk Club, a Nordstrom shopping service that delivers clothes right to your door. Convenience FTW!

What else I love about it:

  • You work with a stylist who picks out clothes based on a survey you take about your lifestyle, your style, what you like and don’t like, etc.
  • It’s not just clothes. Your trunk can include shoes, accessories, swimwear, etc., too!
  • You get to set your price range.
  • You get to preview your trunk before it ships. And if you don’t like something, you can decline it and your stylist will choose something else.
  • You can set the frequency of your trunks or request one whenever you’d like. I currently have mine set up every two months.
  • It’s through Nordstrom – my favorite store!

I’ve gotten three trunks since September, and while I haven’t kept everything from them (far from!), there have been some fantastic pieces, including Paige denim (the best), staple sweaters, and some fresh pieces for spring. Interested? Sign up!

Jazzie (the doberman) had a snowsuit that-it even had a hood! She was also embarrassed when she had to wear it.
