After I finished the YWCA sprint tri in August, I pivoted from racing a mid-September 70.3 – 8 weeks just wasn’t enough time to train for the fitness depth I wanted – and signed up for Square Lake sprint instead. It’s been on my short list of local races for a long time, but it’s never worked out to race because of timing. And because it was a sprint, it gave me more time for other life stuff like time with my kiddo and kettlebells. Without a doubt, the best choice!
I had a bit more fitness than my last race, but that just meant I got to push a little bit harder to find my edge. I felt stronger in the water thanks to my sleeveless wetsuit – the first time wearing it since IMMT in 2018! – and consistently swimming 2x/week. My 13:37 800-yard swim didn’t break any PRs, but it was good enough for third female.
After a not-so-fast T1, it was onto a bike full of rollers so you were either going up or down the entire 18.5 miles. Given my lack of real intensity and specific workouts on the bike the last couple years, I was pretty stoked to come away with the day’s fastest female bike split at 55:34. My Argon might be from 2016, but it’s still a dream – and fast! – to ride. Kudos to my amazing husband for getting it cleaned up and dialed in (like he always does!).
The 5k was an out-and-back on a hilly highway – again either up or down the entire way – so I could see my placement. First wasn’t too far ahead so I put my head down and focused on running as hard as I could to catch her. Even with the fastest female run split – 22:18 – I still came up a smidge short (she beat me in transitions!). Overall, though, a fantastic and super fun morning! And such a great reminder of how much I still love this sport 🤍
