race report: women run the cities stroller 5k

05/27/2022

I’m not one who hops into races on a whim, but this was a one-off I couldn’t pass up for two reasons. One, it fell into the “what I want to race” category (rather than what I should race), and two, Jackson got to tag along in the stroller. So on a unseasonably brisk Saturday, I lined up at the back of the Women Run the Cities 5k with (most) of the other stroller running mommas (I say most because right before the turnaround two other strollers were ahead of me and there’s no way they could have ran through the 1,000-run field so quickly from the back. And yes, I’m competitive even pushing a stroller πŸ˜†).

Anyway, I’d forgotten this race was happening until the night before when friend Katie mentioned she was running (she pushed her two kiddos in a stroller at 4 months postpartum and crushed it!). Because the start line at Minnehaha Park was two miles from our house, I decided it’d be a morning-of decision. Thanks to an uncharacteristically bumpy morning, though – 5:40a, 6:20a, and 7:30a wake-ups – I was gonna scrap it, but when I started pumping at 7:45a I decided why not. So with just an hour to get ready and sign up onsite, we had to hustle! With five minutes to spare, I was ready to go at the back of the 5k corral.

I had no expectations, as it was just for fun and a chance to share something I love with my little dude. And while I wanted to run hard, it was impossible the first half while maneuvering a stroller from the back through so many women. But hey – it made for some really fun negative splits!

Garmin splits: 9:53 / 8:08 / 7:07
Official results: 25:56
