Hi! It’s been awhile. I think we can all agree that last year was weird, and while things are far from normal right now (can people just wear masks and strictly social distance for a few more months please?!), I’m finally feeling a bit more myself β and that means writing again. So let’s start fresh with recap of how the year started. And maybe, just maybe, I’ll be inspired to write a currently at the end of every month (no promises, though!) π
feeling
All the second trimester goodness! My first trimester wasn’t terrible, thank goodness β mostly the deepest fatigue I’ve ever felt (even deeper than after an ironman) and a 5-day stretch of a splitting headache, nausea, and vomiting. But they weren’t kidding when they say the second trimester is bliss. My energy returned, green foods sounded good again (though I still eat my fair share of everything bagels from Asa’s Bakery), and I even started working with my coach after six months off. After several months of restrictions, it’s feels amazing to sweat and work again, albeit not even close to the fitness I had even back in June. Different season of life, and I know that fitness will be back.
reading
I finished three books this month β a decent start toward this year’s reading goal of 50 books.
- Daisy Jones and the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid β took me a bit to get into, but once I did, I enjoyed this story about the rise and fall of a 1970s rock band.
- Yes Please by Amy Poehler β lots of laughs and nuggets of wisdom in this one!
- When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi β hands down, my favorite book. It reminds us to not only ask ourselves what makes a life meaningful and worth living, but also to face our own mortality.
I read for about 20-30 minutes before bed every night, and we’re trying to do a couple nights a week of reading and no TV/screen time (it’s so refreshing to not have the TV on!).
struggling with
Winter. I’m over it. Over the darkness, being cold, having to bundle up and wear boots and a parka, static, dry skin, being inside, all of it. It’s harder this year, too, with traveling by plane not really an option β meaning no warm weather trip. We’ve debated driving somewhere, but I’m not sure I wanna sit in the car for 27 hours(!). So I’m doing my best to embrace what’s left of winter by getting outside even when I don’t wanna, cozying up inside with a cup of tea and a good book (or, let’s be real, watching Netflix most nights), and reminding myself this: In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer. Channeling that for the next 6-8 weeks.
wearing
Anyone else living in sweats right now? They were lifesaver for me during IVF and continue to be my go-to while working from home. Current favorites on rotation:
- Beyond Yoga midi jogger (I’m obsessed β the waistband and fit are perfect)
- The Great wide leg cropped sweatpants
- MALO republic leggings (the panther!),
- lululemon 28″ align pant
I’m usually in a sweatshirt, too, though I do occasionally throw on my favorite cashmere cardigan. I still fit in pretty much all my clothes (except for jeans, but thank goodness for hairband trick), but that said, I’m also planning to buy a handful of strategic maternity pieces that I can wear both now and after.
going
To the Minnehaha off-leash dog park. Luma and Olli are obsessed with this 6-acre wooded park along the Mississippi River (it’s smack in the middle of Minneapolis, too!). They chase each other around for at least an hour, so they’re exhausted when we get home. And there’s something so restorative about walking in the woods, even in the winter. Forest bathing at its finest.
