It doesn’t matter what distance it is or how old you are. From 800 meters to 140.6 miles or age 5 to 87, there’s nothing quite like crossing a finish line… so much emotion, exhaustion and exhilaration. I can still remember high school track finish lines like they were yesterday, and my most recent finish line at Ironman Wisconsin… pure joy!
And, just like this Girls on the Run participant says, crossing a finish line changes you, every single time.
On November 14, more than 500 girls participating in the Girls on the Run Twin Cities (GOTR-TC) 5k will cross that finish line incredibly empowered – and, with their lives positively changed.
GOTR-TC is a 10-week curriculum-based development program offered in 35 elementary and middle schools across the Twin Cities. More than 150 volunteer coaches lead these girls through the program, including the new middle school curriculum, Heart & Sole.
Along with a community service project, the 5k is a culmination of 20 lessons that focus on “The Five Cs Plus One” – confidence, competence, caring, strength of character, connection and contribution – to prevent unhealthy and risky behaviors, including inactivity and negative body image.
What’s not to love about GOTR-TC?! This fantastic organization introduces girls in grades 3-8 to the lifelong sport of running and, most importantly, teaches them that they’re limitless and to pursue their dreams, fiercely and boldly. Because strong girls = strong world.

Think Finley could run a 5k yet!? 😉
I couldn’t agree more with your assessment of crossing finishing lines. I didn’t realize GOTR came with a curriculum as well. Awesome.
This is AWESOME!! I would love to start something like this in Ames!! Since I am not currently running (but hopefully in the next couple of weeks), please don’t consider me for the free entry 😉
When I lived in CA, I was a GOTR assistant coach. Sadly, I haven’t had time to volunteer since I moved here, but a few years ago, I ran the 5k with my young cousin (who was in the program).
I have been meaning to check the boys’ hockey schedule and recruit my nieces for this one! Thanks for the reminder 🙂
