Toward the end of a really hard interval session on the bike recently, I welled up and had to choke back some tears. It certainly wasn’t because of the R-rated Girl Talk lyrics blasting in my ears; those are great for focusing and masking the leg searing pain of a bazillion minutes at 215w. Anyway, during my cool down, it hit me why: I am overwhelmingly grateful for this life. I get to do this… I get to swimbikerun my heart out and chase dreams that just a few years ago weren’t even on the radar… I get to chase the light… and, it’s pretty effing awesome.
I haven’t really talked about my training the past couple months… not sure why other than it’s been humming right along at a steady base-building pace and there really hasn’t been anything earth shattering to share. That said, I’ve been focused… intently focused on each session, giving it my all to achieve my goals this year – and, most importantly, thoroughly enjoying the process. I’ve said it before, but what’s the point if you’re not having fun?!
Pretty pumped about our snazzy Coeur Sports team kit!
So, my goals! I debated sharing these, but then figured why not. I’ve alluded to them often, so here goes! Being thisclose to Kona at Ironman Wisconsin last year fueled the fire – so much so that I’m racing Ironman Coeur d’Alene! Two goals: a this-time-makes-my-heart-beat is posted on the bathroom mirror (not quite ready to share… yet) and Kona(!), obviously. I’m also excited to race one of the most beautiful IMs on the North American circuit (and for the weeklong family vacation at Big Sky following the race). Two 140.6s this year (IMWI is still on the calendar if Kona doesn’t happen) will be a definite test of my limits, but if you’re not occasionally living life on the edge and pushing your boundaries, you’re not really living.
With that, a little training update!
Swimming
Swimming has been going, well, swimmingly. I’ve consistently been in the pool three or four days a week the past two months and doing a lot of paddle work. Paddles are new to me this training cycle, so it took some trial and error to master them, but now that I’ve found my stroke… give me all the paddles! I feel like a swimmer when wearing them, and even better: they’re making me stronger, as I’m seeing 100m times that were laughable (for me) even last season.
Also, it may be winter in Minnesnowta, but that didn’t stop me from trying out my new ROKA Sports Maverick Pro wetsuit. I cannot wait for ice out to actually swim in it! Big ♥ to Coeur Sports!
Biking
As always, there’s no place I’d rather be than on my bike, my true happy place. Other than some outdoor riding in Austin over Christmas, I’ve been stuck on the trainer, suffering through all the intervals and all the watts to Girl Talk. No complaints, though, as I really like the trainer… it’s great for intense focus in a controlled environment. I’ve seen some nice wattage gains the past couple months, and I’m excited to put in more work to see where I’m at come spring when it’s nice enough to ride outside.
That said, as I’ve gotten more comfortable on my Cobb Fifty-Five JOF (which is awesome, BTW), my bike fit… oof. Thank goodness for my incredible bike fitter, Chris, the Bicycle Fit Guru. He’s able to squeeze me in this week for a few tweaks.
Saturday morning suffering (and brunch!) is better with girl friends (and dogs)!
Running
In my entire running career I don’t know that my running has ever been this consistent. It feels good. I’m in the middle of a run-focused block, and though I’m not running far or fast – think two-milers and 9:00+ pace some days – I am running often… like six days a week often (don’t worry… the build has been conservative). Speed work starts this week, and coach started double run Sundays a few weeks ago. Finding the motivation to run late Sunday afternoon requires a bit of digging – especially when it’s 25ºF, dark and windy – but overall, I kinda like it… good mental training! We’ll see how it goes as mileage increases.
I’m still running in Hoka Cliftons, and with each step, I wonder how on earth I ever ran in any other shoe. They’re da bomb, and I’m convinced they’ve kept me injury free since I started running in them last February. Bonus: They last forever. I just replaced my first pair of Cliftons, which had 460 miles on them! And, a little shout-out to my favorite MSP running store, Mill City Running, for all their support and this sweet Hoka trucker (you rock, Bekah and Jeff!).
And, strength training! While it’s not heavy weightlifting à la CrossFit, it’s great functional strength and core work that’s making a big difference in my mobility, core, hips and glutes. These bands may be little, but damn… they’re mighty.
Happy swimbikerunning, friends!

so excited to follow your journey this year!
Thank you, Kristin!
I’m so excited that you signed up for IMCDA also!! I LOVE that course and venue. While I haven’t raced it…yet…I spent a whole week out there for IMCDA volunteering and training on the course in 2012. I’m excited to follow your journey and love that you #dreambig 🙂
How fun that you volunteered and trained at CdA! I’ve only heard good things about the location and race, so I’m pumped 🙂 Dream big always, right?!
Absolutely!!
So unbelievably exciting! I cannot wait to track you at IMCDA! Get it, girl! Thanks for being such an inspiration and sharing your updates on trusting the process and the grind, I need that right now 🙂
Aww, you’re so sweet, Kim! Thank you! xo.
Woo!! So pumped for you Erin! Kona is a big, awesome goal, and I believe in you! Sounds like you are training strong and smart. Ccan’t wait to see your progress and cheer for you as the season moves along. So exciting!
Thank you so much, Kelsey! Excited to follow your season, too!
Wahooo – CDA! I am *so* excited for you!
And if you need some tips on travel btwn CDA and Big Sky, let me know. I went to college in MT and know I-90 well.
Thanks, Erin! Ooo… I’ll totally hit you up for some travel tips! Did you go to school in Bozeman?!
So exciting, Erin! I’m so happy you’ve decided to race Ironman Coeur d’Alene! Good luck and enjoy the training – see you out on River Pkwy and/or Summit Ave…..
Thanks, Valerie! Hope to see you out running soon! Maybe coffee, too?!
Coeur d’Alene – that is so exciting! Seeing as it was my first and (at this point) only IM, it has a very special place in my heart. It’s such a gorgeous course and the town is amazingly supportive.
Glad that your training is going so well. I think I needed to read about *focus* today!
Aw, fun! Any CdA tips for me?! 🙂 Thank you, Kristina! Your recent hike looked gorgeous! I can almost feel that sunshine 😉
I thought you would probably sign up for CDA! Good luck!! Unfortunately that was my “worst” (in terms) of execution of an IM!! I would like to go back and do it again. It might be on my radar for 2016. Wish I was going to be there this year!! They have changed the bike course since I did it. You are training so hard and you were so close last time. I have no doubt that you will execute well there!! Sounds like training is going well! Keep up the good work!!! So excited for you!!!
You thought right, Leslie 🙂 I didn’t know you raced CdA… fun! Thank you! I’m super excited!
YES! It was my 2nd IM! I was totally going to “kill it”! I PR’d but my nutrition was way way off on the bike so my run was shit! LESSONS LEARNED!! 🙂
I just love your blog. You rock, and I can’t wait to follow your journey this year. Yes, you GET to do this- how awesome that our bodies can do this???
I really hope our paths cross some time because I think you’re pretty rad!
Aww, thanks so much, lady! I really hope our paths cross soon, too, because you’re awesome, too! 🙂 Maybe we’ll both be in Madison at some point?!
I think this quote describes you perfectly — ‘If you work really hard, and you’re kind, amazing things will happen.”
I truly believe amazing things will happen for you this year because you are such a kind, compassionate person with a beautiful heart….and you put so much of that heart into triathlon. I’m so excited for what 2015 has in store for you, my dear! You’re going to rock it!
Aw, you’re the sweetest! *blushing* Thanks so much, lady! And, right back at you… this is gonna be your year, too; I just know it! Can’t wait to follow along 🙂 xo.
This was a wonderful post. You are so lucky to get to push your boundaries and chase you dreams. It’s going to be an incredible year for you and I can’t wait to follow along your journey 🙂
Thanks so much, Amy!
So excited you are doing Coeur d’Alene; I really hope you get your KQ there!!!
And, awesome your training is going so well, and that it’s nice and consistent!! Love that you are really chasing your dreams. I’m sure it’s your year to shine 🙂
Thank you, Abby! I hope so, too 🙂
P.S. Do you have baby news yet?! 🙂
I have no doubt you’re going to have an amazing season Erin! Keep on doing what you’re doing cause I’m sure it is working! Best of luck in your upcoming races. I can’t wait to cheer you on!
Thank you, Beth! Hope you’re well!
I love this post! You are going to be so strong this season! I am enjoying living vicariously through others’ training right now. Looks amazing and so great you are loving it.
Thanks so much, Britt! It’s been so fun reading your pregnancy posts… I know when I do have kids eventually they’ll be a good resource 🙂 Hope you’re feeling well!
There is solid work happening here! So glad you are headed to CdA, I LOVED it in 2012 such a cool little town and so much support. You are killing it this season, I definitely see some aloha in your near future =)
Solid indeed, and so much fun! I’m super pumped to race CdA! Was it your first IM? Excited to follow your journey, too, to IM Canada! You’re going to love that race! It’s stunning.
I loved this post! I am really excited for you in things to come this summer!!! You are certainly working hard during the time that will pay off the most! Also…that pic of you in your Couer kit is super cute 🙂
Thanks so much, Corey! Looks like your Bayshore training is going well! And, Ragnar looked so fun! Key West… so much better than the tundra, right?!
I love that you appreciate all that you get to do and keep chasing the light! It is so true on days when I don’t want to run that I remind myself that I don’t have to run, I GET to run!
Yes! It’s all about having the right attitude, right?! Thanks, lady!
Oh I know those little band exercises all too well! It’s amazing how such little movement can burn so much! Love the look of the new Cliftons, I’m about ready to upgrade mine to a new pair. I am BEYOND happy I made the move to Hokas, I don’t think I will ever run in anything else, ever again! By the way… SO PUMPED for you racing IMCDA!! You are going to crush it! Smart decision on your part! I must say, I am pretty jealous that you are doing an IM in June. I have to wait until August for IMMT… and if I reach my dream of Kona, it’s only a short 7 weeks later. You’ll have lots of time to recover WHEN you qualify:) Let’s just hope we get to go together! The thought of two IM’s in 2015 is scary, but I think we are both strong enough to handle it:) So much to look forward to this year!
Yes, I agree… we’re both strong enough to handle two IMs this year 🙂 So pumped for you, too, my friend! Line up at Kona together?! 🙂 Also, so glad you’re loving your Cliftons, too! Best shoes ever.
Ahhhhh!!! I’m so excited that you are doing IMCDA. I think it worked out perfectly because you are now doing two and I am doing zero… be sure to put in a little extra umph for me! Actually, I’m thinking about heading that way for the event to either spectate and cheer, or volunteer. Now that I know you are doing it, I’m convinced that I need to come cheer you on. Will you have many people there to support you? I yell/cheer really loud and make the most glamorous signs! 🙂 So excited for you, Erin!!!
Thank you so much, Kristen! That would be wonderful if you spectated at CdA! It would great to meet you IRL! Nick and my family will be there for sure, and I think a good friend of mine may road trip out there with me. So excited! And, I’m excited for YOU, my friend! 🙂
