Melting into my mat during savasana, cool lavender-scented towel over my eyes, teacher Kim said…
Don’t be afraid to put bananas on your toast.
As we soaked in the hour of exceptionally blissful vinyasa – more amazing after a solid weekend of training – she told us why. Her boyfriend likes plain ol’ nut butter toast… no jam to jazz it up. But, while making him breakfast recently, she switched it up, lovingly set it in front of him and went on with her day. Later, he said to her, “You put bananas on my toast this morning. And, it was fantastic!”
So, don’t be afraid to put bananas on your toast.
In other words: Don’t be afraid of the unknown. Embrace it. Explore it.
Try something new.
Be curious – in everything you do. Instead of child’s pose, try that inversion in yoga. Push a little harder on those bike intervals. Take a new bike route. Sign up for your first 5k or triathlon. Explore that potential career change you can’t stop thinking about. Itching to move across the country? Do it. Take that solo international vacation (everyone should do this at least once). Who’s stopping you?
Because what’s the worst that could happen? You might fall out of your inversion or you may not hold that bike interval… yet. You may discover you love running or find your true calling in that career change. Maybe you won’t like living in that new city, but went and tried it and it’s ok if you move back. Don’t take no for an answer. Don’t give up, ever; it’s worth the work.
Ask questions. Push boundaries. Color outside the lines. Keep exploring.
Don’t ever be afraid to put bananas on your toast. You never know… you may even like it.

This is EXACTLY how I felt about yesterday’s time trial…I was doing something new and nervous about it, but it was awesome and I can’t wait to do it again 🙂 Thanks for the reminder and perspective Erin!!
In my household we call it “SuperToast”! And it includes a few sprinkles of oats for my husband. He loves!
🙂
Totally ironic that this post comes out the day I enter my first triathlon!!!! You always have great perspective Erin, that’s why I love your blog, and this post. I also agree about the solo international vacation: New Zealand for a week, and Biarritz, France for 5 days was mine.
It’s also ironic I made paleo Cinnamon Banana Chocolate swirl bread 😉
Love this!! I am so not brave in many areas of my life, so to push myself I always ask what’s the worst that can happen. Generally, the worst isn’t bad at all!
Thanks for the reminder and inspiration 🙂
To interpret this literally, I’ll say that your toast looks great!
Great message, by the way, and I love the reminder to be curious. I think that, as we get older, that can be more difficult, but maybe it’s even more important precisely because of that reason.
I.LOVE.THIS!!! I absolutely need to take your advice and run with it! I have one more big build before Canada and I need to push it hard! I am really getting serious about changing my career as well! Thanks!!!
I love this! I just signed up for my first half marathon, and I’m scared out of my mind. I need to be better about being curious in my day-to-day life, so thanks for this thoughtful reminder.
Since you love those time trials, I plan to sign up for one here next month. I’m scared. But I’m gonna do it! (Do they have a turtle division?)
Love this post!
How is the mindy book?
First of all, I love bananas on toast or in my almond butter sandwich… can’t go wrong either way!
It’s scary when you are taken out of your comfort zone, but it’s also exciting at the same time:) I have some challenging weeks ahead with IM training and I am exhausted just thinking about it… I know I can do it though! Mind over matter:)
