And, suddenly, it’s May 1 (not that it feels like May in Minnesnowta). How the heck did that happen?!! April was a bust… between five different airports and one amazing vacation (recap soon, I promise!), setting monthly goals completely slipped my mind.
With that, here’s what’s up this month.
organizing
With both Nick and I training for IRONMAN Canada, our place is in serious disarray. You can barely see the dining table there’s so much stuff stacked on top of it. So, this month, it’s finally time to clean off the table, find a home for the Garmins when they’re not in use, purge the pile of magazines and actually hang a few pictures on the walls.
reading
Can you believe I read five books in April?! I’m still debating what to pick up this month, but have quite a tall stack of books on my nightstand.
- On vacation I plowed through: Wild by Cheryl Strayed (and now want to hike the Pacific Crest Trail); Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World that Can’t Stop Talking by Susan Cain (yes, I’m very much an introvert); and, Lean In by Sheryl Sanberg (a must-read!)
- And, with all the airport time the rest of April, I finished The Secret Race by Tyler Hamilton and Daniel Coyle (wow… just wow) and Bossypants by Tina Fey (pretty sure my single serving friends thought I was crazy for laughing hysterically en route between MPLS and Detroit).
Sunday meal prepping
At about 3p every day, Nick and I exchange the following text messages: Me: Any ideas for dinner? // Nick: No idea. // Me: No ideas?! Chicken? Ground turkey with rogan josh? Sweet potatoes? Coconut rice? Quinoa? Spinach? // Nick: It all sounds good! Frustration ensues, and we almost always end up post-swimbikerun starving and aisle wandering at the co-op at 8:30p. This month we will meal prep for the week on Sundays!
foam rolling
Pretty sure I’m the world’s worst foam roller, even though I know how much it hurts so good (stretching, myofascial release, increased blood flow to soft tissues, among others). I look at it every single night and tell myself I should roll, but then it’s suddenly 10:30p, and all I want to do is sleep. So, in May, it’s all about foam rolling after training! And, some legs up the wall!
Have an excellent month, friends! What goals are you working toward?

Foam rollers are the best. I’ve had almost zero leg pain this time around training for a marathon and the only difference that I can think of is that I roll out my legs/back a few times a week. 🙂
They are magic, aren’t they?! Glad you’re feeling well and aren’t in pain! How’s the training going?! I’m so excited for you!
That all sounds great! I guess I need to start thinking about what I want to/need to do this month!
The months sneak up on me! Before we know it, it’s gonna be August 🙂 Did you write some goals for May?!
i loved lean in! and quiet and wild are on my list. i’d recommend kelly oxford’s book (everything is perfect when you are a liar) for a funny/non-thinking read this month! you have a crazy amount of stuff going on – i’m so impressed by your goals!
Ooo… that book sounds excellent! Thanks for the recommendation, dear! Agreed… I loved Lean In, too!
I’d like to read that Chrissy Wellington book everyone in the running blog world is talking about. I read Silver Linings Playbook when we were in Italy, it was really good!
My husband and I plan our meals before we do our grocery shopping. We always aim to make something in the slowcooker or a large lasagna on the weekend to then have leftovers for the week. We also take into consideration what nights are active nights for both of us (Tuesdays!) so we intentionally plan for leftovers that night. You really need to like leftovers I think. Sundays are always rest days at home and we deliberately do nothing, so I have time to bake healthy bars and make other food for the week.
Do you two have a slowcooker? If not, best investment ever for a busy, active person! We’ve made some meals throughout the week in it, and it’s such a relief to come home from work/running knowing that a delicious meal is minutes away (we just cook the quick side to go with it). Good luck!
I *just* ordered both those books! Have you seen the movie? I liked it, but haven’t read the book yet… and, the book is always better.
Great meal prep tips… thanks, lady! We made a four-pound pork shoulder in the crock-pot on Saturday… we’re still eating it! 🙂
Yum! We’ve done pulled pork, it was to die for.
Haven’t seen Silver Linings Playbook, but it’s on our Lovefilm list, so we’ll watch it when we get it in the mail. The book is an easy, quick read, very quirky.
I can’t wait to read Lean In! And your idea about prepping meals every Sunday is genius. I’ve been meaning to start that weekly tradition for months now. Maybe now that I’m 70.3 training will leave a few extra hours for it. Happy training!
It’s excellent and a must-read for all women (and men!). Enjoy!
Happy training to you, too!
Those are great goals for May! I hope to read more this month too. How was WILD? That is on my list!
Wild was fantastic… hiking the PCT is on list life list now 🙂 What’s on your reading list?
Dark Places by Gillian Flynn (the other of Gone Girl) has me in bed early to read!
Next up…prob some chick Lit and I can’t wait to read Kitchen House too!
I just finished Bossypants on my flight home from San Diego – it was hilarious!
It is SO funny! Hope you’re well, Heather!
