weekly workouts // april 30

05/06/2012

Monday, April 30 – a much needed rest day since I didn’t take one last week. Serious relaxation – and, it felt amazing.

Tuesday, May 1 – legs = lead. Thank you, 203 back squats on Sunday. The original plan was CrossFit with Katie, but we rescheduled for later this month, as she has her first MMA fight May 12 (such a rock star!). So, I hopped on my Madone for a solo, high candence spin down Summit and river roads to loosen my legs. Halfway through, I saw Hyedi running near Lake Street bridge… so fun to bump into friends while working out!

Ride stats: 15.26 miles, 1:02:05.

Wednesday, May 2 – today was originally reserved for yoga – my favorite teacher, Amelia, teaches at 6p at CorePower Grand Avenue – but there was no way I could not ride my bike. It was perfect outside. And, after a particularly craptacular afternoon, some quality solo saddle time in the sunshine was necessary.

Twenty-six miles of happiness (1:35:25).

A few random thoughts from my ride…

  • Women’s cycling apparel is marginal at best. Why is it so difficult to design shorts that don’t crawl halfway up your back and a jersey that’s not pink?!
  • lululemon should add a couple pockets to the back of the scoop neck tank… and, bam, you have the perfect cycling tank. Wunder unders + a chamois would also make pretty sweet cycling kicks. I may have my seamstress mom modify one of my scoop necks… hmm…
  • I’m not a matchy-matchy kit kinda girl.
  • Cats, the Greenway and bicycles don’t mix. The tabbie’s tail just missed a rollover from my front wheel.
  • My Madone has a strange squeak / creak in the front fork area. I’m kind of concerned.

Thursday, May 3 – just 50 quick kettle bell swings after work, as I had a dinner date at 112 Eatery with a few of my favorite girls.

Friday, May 4 – does the Pedal Pub count as a workout? I really didn’t think it would be tough to pedal a cart around with the help of 11 other people, but by the time our two-hour tour of Uptown was done, my legs were surprisingly tired. If you haven’t Pedal Pubbed, do; it’s a ton of fun!

Saturday, May 5 – double up! The day started with a deceptively difficult CrossFit WOD at the St. Paul box. The first half = 3 x 400m runs. Not the fastest times, but at least I’m consistent… 1:45 / 1:45 / 1:42.

The WOD:

15, 12, 9, 6, 3 reps for time:
Right arm dumbbell clusters (clean + thruster)
Left arm dumbbell clusters
Five burpees in between each arm and round

My time: 14:01. Clusters are challenging… my shoulders were shot by the third round. I scaled the burpees to three for rounds 12 and 9. Not sure why because five was manageable… I need to learn to not second-guess myself.

A C2 vinyasa class at the CorePower Yoga Grand Avenue studio followed CrossFit – and, it was bliss. The second I walked in the hot, humid room, I relaxed and felt the week’s stress melt away. It wasn’t an overly difficult class, but thanks to CrossFit clusters, my arms nearly gave out in the first chaturanga. Yikes. Savasana was especially wonderful, and as I relaxed into the four corners my mat, the world was completely shut out for a few quiet minutes.

Saturday night festivities included a trip to the 1029 Bar for some Smack Shack, followed by the Bob Schneider concert at MPLS’s best concert venue, the Fine Line. (Excellent concert, by the way.)

Sunday, May 6 – a pretty mellow day, consisting of sleeping in, eggs + bacon, a little shopping (Nick finally got an iPhone!) and some soccer watching. A perfect day to relax, not stressing about getting in a workout.

Starting tomorrow, however, the training is gonna pick up (Chisago half iron isn’t that far away). My goals: CrossFit twice, make it to the pool at least once and run a couple times, even if it’s bright and early before work.

What are your fitness goals this week?

Via twitter, I found some women’s tri apparel: http://www.soasracing.com/ … I really like the shorts! Short morning runs sound great! And, currently debating joining Nick’s tri team and putting cfsp on hold until after Chisago… hmm…

Yeah — I’m starting to tri (ha) to prioritize workouts also. Priority right now is Grandma’s half, but then Chisago is only a little over a month after that!! ahhhhh
