reading + thinking about

My Husband’s Tumor. If you read one thing today, this is it (but, be prepared to end up reading her entire blog… have tissues handy, too; you will need them). Their story, gracefully told by Nora, is a sharp reminder that life is far too short… so, live big + boldly, have fun and love hard every single day. #RIPBigPurm

One of my favorite excerpts:

I’ve learned, from Aaron and my father’s death and my mother’s graceful entrance into widowhood, that this is what being an adult is: doing everything before you are ready. There is no syllabus for life that helps your graduate to the next event. It is happening all around you, all the time. This life itself is the lesson and the test and there is no honor roll, just the sum of your relationships and actions and how you feel when you lay down to go to sleep at night.

training

It’s amazing how quickly your body responds when you start regimented training again. I’m definitely nowhere near where I was in August, obviously, but I’m feeling good about what’s in store for 2015. Coach had me start using paddles in the pool, and after some trial and error, they finally don’t fly off every other stroke. Bonus: they make me feel really fast. Running… I’m up to a whopping 30 slooooow minutes. And, despite living in the tundra where temps rarely creep above 20ºF for four months, I’ve resolved to run outside. Because there’s no such thing as too cold if you’re dressed properly (and, that includes getting over the dorkiness factor of shorts over running tights to keep the bum warm). As for cycling… funny how 10 watts can make all the difference in the near-puke factor. Definitely being pushed outside my comfort zone. I like love it.

curious about

Twitter faving. When did all this favoriting tweets start?! And, is there any protocol behind it… when to fave, what to fave, why to fave. I used to only favorite tweets I wanted to reference (articles, quotes, etc.), but now it seems faving is a way to end a twitter conversation, done instead of a reply (as a thank you perhaps?) or is completely random. Tell me… what do you fave and why?!

listening to

Serial. I know I’m late to the party, but OMG, SERIAL IS SO GOOD. Nick and I binge listened to all nine episodes during nearly 12 hours in the car over Thanksgiving weekend. And, I’ve never been so thankful for a 30-mile commute when episode 10 was released yesterday! If you haven’t listened, open your podcast app and subscribe immediately.

watching

The Banff Mountain Film Festival world tour. This is the third year Nick and I have attended, and once again, it didn’t disappoint. A few of our favorites:

  • Mending the Line – so touching! WWII vet Frank Moore found respite in fly fishing after the war; in the film, he returns to Normandy to fish the river he saw 70 years ago.
  • Cerro Torre: A Snowball’s Chance in Hell – this featured David Lama’s quest to free climb Patagonia’s Cerro Torre. Breathtaking scenery (Patagonia is tops on my must-visit list) and an intriguing story line (though the subtitles were difficult to read)
  • Wild Women – there weren’t many films about women at the festival (c’mon, film makers! Start featuring rad women!), but this one about slackliner Faith Dickey was fantastic. “Everyone has a different comfort zone, and I think everyone should push these comfort zones,” she says. Hers is slacklining without safety.

loving

Girl talk. No, not the DJ (though he’s rad, too), but rather girl talk in real life. This week I met up with two friends (who I don’t see nearly enough), and we talked life for nearly four hours (I didn’t check my phone once!). It was lovely. My sister and I have also been spending time together… a painting night last month and one of our Christmas gifts to each other is attending a LAB MPLS cocktail lab next week. Because buying experiences trumps stuff any day.

My Husband’s Tumor is such a good read. Beautiful, poignant, hilarious and inspiring all at the same time.

I fave things on Twitter because they’re things I want to get back to later, a kind word someone has shared, something funny or something inspiring. I’m curious to know why other people fave things on Twitter as well.

Plus one for paddles and winter running!! Paddles are one of my favorite training tools. And it is pretty dang cold here in Ottawa too, but I’d rather run in snow than on a treadmill.

Keep hearing amazing things about Serial… probably time to give it a listen. (Especially since I have always loved mysteries.)

that is a brilliant way to count laps. seems a bit bulky for a gym bag, but totally worth it.

I fave things on Twitter much the same way as I Like things on Facebook. I’ll hit that little star if I love something that someone said + if a statement doesn’t really necessitate or warrant a reply but I still want them to know that I’m acknowledging it.

Basically, I look at it as a Twitter high-five.

I’ve actually never used the Favorite feature as a way to archive or go back to something. Now I will, though!

I read “My Husband’s Tumor” and it brought tears to my eyes. So sad, yet so meaningful at the same time. As a school teacher who lives on a schedule and syllabus, I love the reference to the no syllabus for life.

I love the abacus. I’ve been looking at getting one for years to count my laps while swimming, but I’ve often thought I would look silly walking to the pool with a big abacus in my swim bag 😉

I didn’t realize I could use the favorite feature as a way to go back and reference a particular post. Now that I know it, I’ll definitely use it for that purpose, but I also look at it as an acknowledgement…particularly if someone has directly commented on my post, but I don’t have anything more to say.

I love building memories through painting outings, through craft days (which we have periodically here) and branching out to try new things. It is the perfect gift instead of a tangible something-or-other that gets put in the closet/cupboard/basement and rarely thought of. 😉

I need to listen to Serial. I have heard awesome things about it!

Good question about the twitter favoriting!?! I favorite something once in a while. I like things on FB way more often. I think it is more of a want to acknowledge but don’t want to tweet back? I am still relatively new to twitter (about a year) so what do i know! 😉

I agree with you on training. I am feeling better about everything now that i am more into a routine! Feels good! 2015 is going to be good!!

I think favouriting on Twitter is akin to liking someone’s photo, status, comment on FB. I do it out of etiquette really, I feel it’s a must.

I always love your Currently posts! I wanted to take Kelly to the actual Banff Mountain Film Festival but we took Harold with us to the mountains that weekend. Hopefully we can go the weekend it is here 🙂

That is a beautiful excerpt from the blog…so true! Sometimes I”m still amazed that I am an adult and need to put on my big girl pants and pull it together each day. It’s always great to get some perspective. I just finished a fantastic book called What Alice Forgot and picked up Wild at the library today (figured I should get a head start before the movie).

My training has been more strength based and it always amazing me how quickly my body responds (positively) to weights. Planning to get signed up for a tri and back in the pool at the start of 2015. Can’t believe it’s right around the corner!!!

Never heard of serial, but now I’m curious! I’m going to have tok check it out. I’m not sure how I feel about the favoriting on twitter… I have a habit of favorited everything that someone tweets to me, ha ha. Not sure if that’s the norm? I must ask you, what do you use for a power meter? I really want one (I only train on heart rate). I want to get stronger on the bike in 2015!!

  • Reply Brittany 12/07/2014 at 9:57 am

After seeing the area last year, I can’t wait to watch the Cerro Torre movie, thank you for posting about it 🙂 Glad you are loving your training!

I always realize how spoiled I am living in Southern CA in the winter, but running outside is medicine for my soul. Love these “Currently” posts!

I like your currently posts too! It’s great to hear your settling into training again-it’s so motivating to have a goal.

SO guilty of the weird twitter favoriting thing! Glad you brought that up. I just noticed I have waaaay too many things “favorite-ed.” It’s bizarre. But I know I do it to let someone know I read their tweet.

Experiences are def way more bang for your buck.

And girl talk is the best!

  • Reply Kristen @ Glitter and Dust 12/11/2014 at 4:49 pm

I am still trying to figure out Twitter, period. I just set up an account a few months ago and really struggle to keep up. Usually when I post on Facebook I have something of substance to say, but with Twitter anything goes. Is this correct? Haha

I love the idea of art and cocktails. I wish we had something like this around here, or a paint/wine experience. Perhaps this should be my next career.

When I saw girl talk, for some reason the first thing that came to my mind was the “Girl Talk” game from the 80s. Don’t ask me why.
