recent reads: december 2013

12/31/2013

Is it just me, or did December seem super short? Unfortunate, too, because the stack of books on my nightstand is tall. I’d love a day with nothing to do but lounge in PJs, drink pots of tea and read until my eyes are crossed. Because I can’t read just one book at a time, I’m currently in the middle of… The Desire Map, Money: A Love Story and A Life on the Edge. All excellent so far.

The month wasn’t a total reading bust, however. Here are a few of my favorites…

I believe every single person has a story (and, when I write my book, it will stem off of this). This story is a good reminder of not only that, but to always be kind and to really see people. I also love this, The Strangers Project:

Make up your mind to be awesome. Every day.

I know I’m not the only one who’s still trying to figure out what I want to do when I grow up. This is a great exercise to help hone in on it.

Maybe if I rotated multiple pairs of running shoes (I know, I know!), I wouldn’t be wearing a boot right now. This article details a new study that found runners who rotated shoes had a lesser chance of injury.

These 60-second National Geographic adventure videos are rad.

I best get traveling… these 27 spots are absolutely incredible. Norway currently tops my list (photo courtesy of opedal on Flickr); the Maldives are a close second. Closer to home, the Grand Canyon is a must-see soon.

You create your own happiness. And, how happy you are comes down to how you choose to live your life, says this Outside article. I know in 2014, I’m choosing to play more – and, get a hound 🙂

Tea is my year-round go-to, but after reading this article detailing the GMOs, “natural flavors” and plastic tea bags used by common tea brands – gross! – I’m a little miffed and have switched to Numi (the jasmine green and morrocan mint are both nice).

Happy reading, friends!

Wow, that is crazy about tea. We really drink a lot here but mostly free leaf tea. Although I do love me some Tazo!

Isn’t it crazy?! I finished up my Tazo and have switched to Numi… it’s even better!

We’ve been buying tons of loose leaf these days. I”ll have to check it out but I just spent even more money at David’s tea today!

OMG! I am so sad about the tea…I literally bought a box of celestial seasonings tonight! WTF!!!!
Are you kidding me with those 27 incredible spots!? Gorgeous!! I’ve been to the Grand Canyon and Waitomo! Both are amazing!
I usually rotate with 2 pairs of running shoes! Typically the same pair but I bought a pair of Hokas in the spring and I think those have worked pretty good!(plus they last longer than regular running shoes!) 🙂
Thanks for picking out some good articles as usual!!

I know, right?! It’s crazy and scary what’s not only in tea, but in all processed food. The food babe is a great resource.

I’m intrigued by Hokas… you like them? Not sure what I’ll wear once my heel is healed up.

The Hokas are intriguing!! They are different. I feel like I get more support from them. I was spectacle at first but I do like them!! If you do get a pair be prepared for everyone to make fun of you!! 🙂

Uh oh…I don’t even want to open that tea article. Ignorance is bliss, right?

I think there is a balance between rotating shoes and rotating too many shoes. Too many might actually prevent muscles from getting stronger since they can’t build up in that one position. I’ve always heard of having the everyday running pair and then the lighter pair. I’m guilty of only running in one lighter pair, but I’m sure I’ll be rethinking everything about running shoes post-surgery rehab here 🙂

Haha… I know! I didn’t want to read it, either!

I think you’re right. Two pairs (an everyday pair and a lighter pair) seem to be ideal… or, even the same kind, but two different pairs. I’ll be interested to know what you switch to when you start running again! I’m still debating… will be going shoe shopping!

I def don’t know what I want to be when I grow up. Does amateur amateur triathlete count? lol Thanks for the great recommnedations. My 2013 was fail year for reading. Trying to get back on that horse.

    • Reply erin 01/19/2014 at 4:17 pm

Ha… it totally counts! That’s what I really want to be, too 🙂

You’re welcome! I’m working on reading more books this year, too.

I never knew that about tea. Thanks for sharing. I’m interested how keurig teas stack up since that’s what I mostly drink

    • Reply erin 01/19/2014 at 4:19 pm

Hmm… I never thought about Keurig teas. I didn’t even know there was Keurig tea!

I love how we seem to be reading/digging the same books at once…in the middle of “Money: A Love Story”, too!

Love all these links; they took me a while to get through since we have so much of the same taste!
I’ll definitely be doing what the Huffington Post article says to find my passion!
And those travel photos….amazing. Could you actually go on the swing at the end of the world? I can vouch for Whitehaven Beach in Australia. It really is amazing!
    Thank you for sharing!
