banff film festival.

11/26/2013

From surfing the frozen Norwegian seas to mountain biking precarious Austrian mountain peaks, the Banff Mountain Book and Film Festival is crazy inspiring. Friday’s showing at the University of Minnesota, sponsored by Midwest Mountaineering, was no exception. It certainly makes the day-to-day desk job look pretty ho-hum and leaves me yearning to sell everything, toss a few essentials in a giant pack and goooooo.

But, perhaps what inspires me the most is how passionate those in each film are about their sport. They seek out adventure in faraway places, do exactly what they love to do, what they were born to do – and, do what most of us wish we could do.

But, why can’t we?! As Bruce Kirkby said in the film The Questions We Askthe questions we ask shape our path.

So, ask more questions, embark on crazy adventures, find your passion, shape your path and go!

banff

I can’t pick just one favorite of the seven films we saw, but here are the trailers to two and two full-length films.

Grand prize winner, North of the Sun – two Norwegians surfed + skied on a secluded beach north of the Arctic Circle for a year. I’m cold just thinking about it 🙂

Keeper of the Mountains. In an era when women didn’t have careers other than homemaker or teacher, Elizabeth Hawley traveled the world and settled in Kathmandu, where she became a journalist, interviewing every single Everest climber. Whip smart woman.

In Cascada, despite days of downpours, the guys kayaked some wicked waterfalls in Mexico.

And, The Last Ice Merchant. Baltazar Ushca has climbed Mount Chimborazo in Ecuador for decades to harvest ice. He can’t imagine life any other way.

So so cool! I would love to see that film “Keeper of the Mountain”. The stories that lady must have!!! Oh my gosh. I went to Banff on Saturday and the films were equally awesome! I really liked “High Tension”.

These sound like INSPIRING movies to watch on the trainer in the basement while riding. Great motivation and encouragement to push a little harder 🙂 Thanks for sharing Erin!!

If you ever decide to come and see the festival in person let me know Banff is basically my backyard!

Looks amazing! When I saw something about this, it was too late to go to the actual Banff Film Festival, but since then I’ve made plans to attend the local one.
Seriously- wouldn’t it be great to say see ya to a regular job and life and go adventure the world?!

Yes, definitely attend the local viewing! They are all crazy inspiring. Gah, yes! It would be amazing! Someday perhaps 🙂 Also, are you close to Banff so you could attend the festival?!

        Yes…someday!
And we are pretty close to banff! It’s about a 4.5 hour drive. Kelly’s headed there this weekend with a buddy to ski!

That’s awesome! I wish we lived that close to mountains… it’s pretty flat in Minnesota 🙂

How fun to go to the festival, and it’s true I think a lot of adults forget to dream and believe it can come true.

I was lucky enough to have people in my life to help me let go of a stable, fairly well paid job to take a temporary, barley paid job so that I could follow my dream, a little over a year later, I was in a a permanent position of my dreams (and making more than my previous job but that is beside the point). I can’t say enough that if you follow your passion you will never fail, it’s worth the leap!

That is fantastic, Beth! I’d love to hear more of your story 🙂 I’m also so inspired by people like you… someday (sooner than later), I WILL take the leap to do exactly what I dream of! And, you hit it spot on… most adults forget to dream. It gets lost somewhere after college, when society tells you what you have to do. I say never stop dreaming and dream BIG!

    Hello!! New reader 🙂
I LOVE Banff Mountain Film Festival! While most of the documentaries make me want to get out there and enjoy the outdoors, I have to admit some scare the crap out of me ((the free climber story from a few years ago???)) and I honestly think they are crazy! haha I love it though!

    Have a great Thanksgiving 🙂

YAY! Hi, new reader, Andrea! Thanks for commenting! Ha… you’re right… some of them are insane! The film about the BASE jumpers last year was ridiculous, but oddly enough, I wanted to try it 🙂

Thanksgiving was wonderful, thanks! Hope yours was, too 🙂
