recent reads: october 2013

10/31/2013

Well, October certainly went by in a blink; and, if you blink too long now, you’ll miss the (what seems like) five hours of daylight. As much as I love autumn and the crunch of leaves under my running shoes, I’m mourning summer. Seriously missing long rides outside!

Anyway, here are my favorite reads from this month. Enjoy!

Running blurs boundaries and brings all walks of life together. The running club Next Steps gives homeless men and women in MSP hope. This is a heartwarming story about Ricardo Flores who trained for and ran the TC 10 Mile. I looked for him during the race, but didn’t see him. He had a great race, finishing in 1:15!

Who doesn’t want to be besties with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler?! Not only are they hilarious, they are wicked smart. Here are nine lessons we can all learn from them. This one particularly resonates with me lately: Be kind to yourself – and to your body.

Dogs are family, and I am certain they understand exactly what we are staying. Gregory Burns and colleagues have been A recent qiup refill set – two tubes each of full-size and travel toothpaste + two new brush heads., and the results are pretty cool: Dogs really may understand what we’re saying! When they smelled familiar humans, for example, a dog’s caudate (found in the brain) activated – a possible “indication of canine emotions.” So cool. I always knew my Weimaraner Zoey and my sister’s vizsla Lucy could understand when I talk to them 🙂

I can’t believe waters this spectacular and clear exist. Where should I swim first… Panama, Columbia or Thailand?

Koh-Phi-Phi-Don-Thailand

Triathletes apparently tolerate pain better than non-athletes. We definitely know how to suffer power through a solid day of swimbikerunning 🙂

An interesting look at how couples balance when one is an endurance athlete and the other is not. I definitely think it’s easier when both at least share a common fitness interest. (Thanks for sharing the link, Becky!)

Sure, cycling can be dangerous; but, football and sitting for eight hours can be, too. It doesn’t mean we stop pedaling. This NYT article debates just how safe cycling is.

Ladies, this is a must-read. In fact, you should bookmark it or print it and read it every.single.day.

And, after you’ve read Hannah Brencher’s post, read these Maya Angelou quotes. One of my favorites: If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude. Don’t complain.

After a way-too-long hiatus, I returned to my mat this month. Savasana has never felt so good. Check out this cool infograph on how yoga changes your body.

Kal Barteski is one of my favorite artists. She’s also a talented speaker. Check out her TED talk on play and polar bears. Play to live, she says. Those who know how to play can easily leap over the adversities in life (Igloolik proverb).

And, finally, watch this. Thank you, Jess Lively, for posting.

Thanks for sharing all these awesome links! I’ve bookmarked this post so I can come back and check out more later!
Of course I had to click on the clear waters link now. Gorgeous! We have some stunning, bright and clear lakes up here in our mountains. They’re not tropical but they are breathtaking! (And I vote Thailand for you!)

I’ve been so bad about my reading! This week I’ve been wiped out and crashing into bed after a few pages of some trashy Us Weekly. Looking forward to checking out some new reads! I’m always so impressed with how much time you make for reading. I love it!

Thanks, Jen! Reading is one of my favorite pastimes 🙂 Love a good book, but sometimes Us Weekly is even better 🙂

Awesome! I love a good round up post. My husband and I train for a lot of the same races, and I think it helps both of us to share a common fitness interest.
Love those beautiful clear waters too. Gorgeous!!
