hitting the reset button.

I woke up on the wrong side of the bed on Wednesday. Almost immediately, the day was meh. A normally energizing hour trainer spin was a slugfest, my heart rate in the mid 150s (don’t let the smile in the photo below fool you). A minute before running out the door to work, a glass container shattered to smithereens on the kitchen floor. And, to top it off, I’ve physically been feeling pretty sub-par and ugly lately; thank you, too much eating out (hidden gluten = bloated belly), too many nights out, one too many glasses of Malbec and not enough sleep.

And, so, with a gentle reminder from Lauren on twitter – THANK YOU! – that I have the power to adjust my attitude and restart my day, each and every day, I’m doing just that.

Hitting the reset button.

I’m making changes to live my best life, day in and day out. It begins and ends with: quiet time at home, an attitude of gratitude, adventures with Nick, good ol’ gluten-free home cookin’, sister nights and snuggling with Finley, sweaty swimbikerun pursuits, an occasional night out with my best gal pals, teapots of peppermint tea and lights out by 10:30p.

With that simple decision, I feel better already.

How do you live your best life?

Happy weekend, friends.

My life mantra is “Control what you can control.” That includes my attitude, my nutrition, my sleep/recovery, my stress level (to a certain extent) and competing my workouts (which helps reduce my stress). “Hitting the reset button” might be needed from time to time, but allowing ourselves some freedom to enjoy life every once in a while is also important. A VERY smart woman made a blog post about finding “balance” in life not that long ago. πŸ˜‰

Ahhhh, you are so right πŸ™‚ Thank YOU for the reminder. I’ve been settling into my perfect balance the past week and am feeling much better. I LOVE your life mantra (and subsequent controllables) and just may have to use it πŸ™‚ Hope you had a super weekend!

Sleep for me is crucial, although I’m pretty dedicated to that. Recently, my afternoon sugar intake has NOT helped me at all, and I’m working on that in a major way. And, like you said, expressing gratitude is super important – not letting small things get me down.

My afternoon, er, all day, sugar intake needs to be curbed, too πŸ™‚ Good for you for being dedicated to a good night’s sleep! It is the key to almost everything else.

I had that kind of day on Wednesday, too. It’s tough to stay positive all the time! I’m glad you found a way to work through it. My best life looks a lot like yours–time to train, time for adventures with Rusty, productive days at the office full of respect and camaraderie, and lots of chamomile tea for me. Or peppermint tea. Or licorice tea. It’s hard to choose a tea… πŸ™‚

I think it’s been in the air. Hope the rest of your week and weekend were great! Ah, tea… it’s all SO good!

    I love this post!
I have mornings like this for sure where I just want to crawl back in bed…maybe even with another glass of malbec but I always feel better when I power through and find the light at the end of the tunnel…usually for me it’s when my last patient of the day (when I am the most tired) does or says something incredible! It makes it all worth it! Happy reset!

Thank you! Now that definitely makes it all worth it!

Hope the reset is going well! I know what you mean- I feel gross from too many weeks of eating more than I should. And thanks for the reminder- each and every day I have the choice to change that!

It is, thank you! It’s a tough adjustment after IM training, isn’t it?! I’ve struggled with it a bit. But, like you said… we ALWAYS have the power to have a better day πŸ™‚

Love this! It’s really hard to be so mindful and in control in college but I do so much better when I control what I can. I get made fun of for going to bed before midnight but I know if I stay up any later my schoolwork and training will suffer and I will just be overall crabby

Smart girl! I wish I would have know that in college! You are a great example for so many, Shannon! Hope you’re recovering nicely after NYC! Congrats again πŸ™‚

[…] it feels good. Despite the shorter days – sunset in the 4p hour is ridiculous – the fog of early October seems to have lifted and ushered in earlier bedtimes, better eats and all around better self-care. […]
