detox : day one …and… yoga : day 50

10/19/2010

Aaaaaand… detox number two of 2010 started today. (The first was in February.) I wasn’t planning to do another, but sluggishness and frequent mid-afternoon unsettled stomachs have been major annoyances lately. I’m hopeful this will alleviate both.

The monthlong detox was developed by my good friend Trish, a naturopath physician and owner of Osceola Naturopathic Clinic in Osceola, Wisconsin. Basically, it’s really clean eating coupled with protein shakes in weeks two and three. Here’s the weekly rundown:

Week one : clean eating consisting of loads of fresh veggies, protein (given I’m pretty much a pescetarian, I really struggle here), fruit, legumes, nuts/seeds, whole grains and healthy fats (olive oil and avocado, for example); zero junk and zero processed food.

Week two : elimination of dairy and eggs; addition of protein shakes for morning and afternoon snacks.

Week three : gradually exchange meals for protein shakes; nearly four days are just shakes (and fresh green veggies if you’re starving).

Week four : gradually add foods back in (but still no junk or processed foods).

During February’s detox (it was my first ever), I was worried about the potential starvation factor of weeks two and three; however, I felt amazing… clean, light, refreshed. This time will be similar… I hope!

For the most part, today went well, but, then again, I eat pretty clean to begin with. However, I have serious issues with dark chocolate and ice cream. No lie… a half-gallon of ice cream lasts, hmm, well, not very long. And dark chocolate, especially B.T. McElrath’s Salty Dog… ah.ma.zing! It wasn’t easy to abstain from either today!

In other news… today was day 50 of my yoga challenge. FIFTY! A wonderful hot and vinyasa fusion class at Sigh Yoga + Boutique taught by the amazing Brandyn. Thank you for a blissful class, lovely lady 🙂
